Teaching

I offer a wealth of teaching experience, in both virtual and traditional classroom formats, at the University of Texas at Austin.

My interdisciplinary approach to teaching weaves performance practice with a learner-centered approach to create an environment of fun, critical engagement with the material and with each other. Seeing the ideas click for a student makes me proud as a scholar; supporting another student in helping a peer make an idea click makes me proud as a teacher.

What the Students Say

“Luke is a great scholar in Black Studies, history, poetry, and literature; as a CS major, I learned a tremendous amount from this class and had my eyes opened to topics and modes of thought I had previously not even dreamed of.”

“He was always prepared and responded to our questions and comments thoughtfully which made me feel comfortable to speak in class”

“Luke was clearly very knowledgeable, but presented himself as a fellow student first. This made sections something I looked forward to and did my absolute best to attend!”

“Luke was great in the online format in making sure the Zoom calls were still engaging, and I really felt I didn't lose much from the online format!”

“Best TA I've ever had! Luke was always so thoughtful, warm and kind in all our sections. There was never a "wrong" answer with Luke; he always helped us get our thoughts to where they needed to be.”

“I loved how he used Google docs and Jamboard to engage us and make us think in a way where we could see other people thinking and working at the same time. This was a really great way to use technology to enhance learning, rather than it being a distraction or something that took away from an authentic learning environment.”

“I appreciated Luke's open nature, in general. His calm and nonjudgemental nature made me more inclined to speak with authenticity, from my lived experience, in my discussion posts/poems. I do not think that I would have wrestled with these texts and my personal posts for as many hours as I have if I didn't feel comfortable sharing with my instructor, so Luke's attitude and approach to teaching made all of the difference in my results as a student”

“Luke's sections were the highlight of my week in this virtual world. I truly felt I was seen as a person first, not just a student meant to produce work. Luke is a person who connects to his students and it means a lot to us.”

“Luke has immensely helped me hone my literary analysis skills (particularly in terms of thinking through primary materials, and not simply about those materials). Luke has also really helped me think about what it means to be a productive student in a classroom setting - not taking up too much space, and always creating more space for interesting conversations by asking questions. But above all, I think Luke is kind of the heart and soul of this course. He is so passionate about the way that dance and choreography ('bodies in space') seep into our daily lives, and this is something that I don't think I'll ever forget. He's offered entirely new perspectives on analyzing literature, history, and philosophy, and for that reason I'm beholden to him.”

“Luke's feedback even on short assignments was some of the most detailed, most attentive, most critical (in the most constructive way possible) feedback which I have ever gotten. I have not felt like my academic writing has really been challenged or stretched since freshman year and Luke's feedback completely changed that for me. I will be applying his feedback to my writing in the future.”

“Luke offers great advice in terms of both conceptualizing an argument for a complit paper and in the writing of that argument. He's really helped me pick apart what is important in my analysis and how to best express that in a way that is clear and logical - this is the sort of college-level writing advice that I will take with me when I graduate..”
